What Is Lightning Roulette?
Lightning Roulette is a multiplier version of European Roulette powered by Evolution. The traditional single-zero wheel and familiar betting table remain, but the game adds a random multiplier feature to Straight Up bets.
What makes the game different is the moment after betting closes. Before the ball determines the winning number, the game randomly selects its Lucky Numbers, better known by players as Lightning Numbers. This creates the possibility of much larger payouts and adds an extra moment of suspense to every spin.
The clever part is that Evolution has added this feature without turning roulette into a complicated game. If you already know European Roulette, you can start playing Lightning Roulette immediately. Split, Street, Corner, and outside bets work just as you would expect.
The main change only affects Straight Up bets. Their regular payout is reduced to make room mathematically for the much larger Lightning payouts. This creates a clear choice: play traditional roulette bets, or accept more variation on single-number bets in return for the possibility of a much bigger payout.
For us, that balance is what defines Lightning Roulette. It still feels like roulette, but Straight Up betting becomes considerably more exciting and unpredictable.

A normal European Roulette Straight Up bet pays 35:1. In Lightning Roulette, the standard payout is reduced to 29:1. The difference helps fund the random 50x–500x Lightning payouts.
This means Straight Up players accept a slightly higher house edge of 2.90% instead of 2.70% in exchange for the possibility of a much larger multiplier win.
All other bets are unaffected. Split, Street, Corner, Dozen, Column and even-money bets retain their normal European Roulette payouts and 97.30% RTP.
Expert View: The mathematical cost of chasing Lightning Numbers is surprisingly small. Straight Up RTP falls by only 0.20 percentage points, while the payout distribution changes dramatically. You win less on a normal number hit, but occasionally have the chance to receive 50x–500x instead.

How Lightning Multipliers Work
Lightning Roulette adds multipliers to Straight Up bets, meaning bets placed on a single number. All other roulette bets use their normal payouts and cannot receive a Lightning multiplier.
After betting closes, the game randomly selects between one and five Lucky Numbers. Each selected number receives one of six possible multipliers: 50x, 100x, 200x, 300x, 400x or 500x.
If the ball lands on one of these Lucky Numbers and you placed a Straight Up bet on it, your bet receives the displayed multiplier. If your number wins but was not selected as a Lucky Number, the regular Straight Up payout is 29:1.
This 29:1 payout is important. Standard European Roulette normally pays 35:1 for a Straight Up win. Evolution reduces this to 29:1 in Lightning Roulette to make room for the much larger multiplier payouts.
Example: Suppose you place €1 on number 17.
If 17 wins without being a Lucky Number, you receive the regular Lightning Roulette payout of 29:1. If 17 was selected with a 100x multiplier, the Lucky Payout applies instead. A 500x Lucky Number creates the game’s largest possible multiplier payout on that Straight Up bet.
Expert View: We like how simple the mechanic is. You don’t need to learn a separate bonus game or change how you play roulette. The trade-off is equally clear: Straight Up wins normally pay less than in standard European Roulette, but in return they can occasionally receive a much larger payout of up to 500x.
Lightning Roulette vs XXXtreme Lightning Roulette
Evolution launched XXXtreme Lightning Roulette in 2022 as a more extreme version of the original Lightning Roulette. Both games use the same European Roulette foundation, but XXXtreme adds more multiplier numbers and considerably higher potential multipliers.
In Lightning Roulette, between one and five numbers receive random multipliers ranging from 50x to 500x. XXXtreme starts in exactly the same way, but then adds a Chain Lightning round. This can create up to nine additional multiplier numbers, with a maximum of ten multiplier positions in total.
XXXtreme also adds Double Strikes. These can hit an existing Lightning or Chain Lightning Number and increase its multiplier to between 600x and 2,000x. The original Lightning Roulette stops at 500x.

The main difference is therefore not the roulette itself, but how far Evolution takes the multiplier mechanic. Lightning Roulette keeps it simple: the Lucky Numbers appear and the wheel determines the result. XXXtreme adds another stage with Chain Lightning and the possibility of Double Strikes before the roulette result is known.
Expert View: We prefer the simplicity of the original Lightning Roulette for regular play. The multiplier feature adds something extra without taking too much attention away from the roulette itself. XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is the more spectacular option, with more multiplier positions and a 2,000x maximum, but it also moves further away from the straightforward feel of classic roulette.

What’s My Opinion on Lightning Roulette?
Lightning Roulette is still one of my favourite roulette games. I have always liked Evolution’s Lightning games, but for me, the original remains one of the best examples of how multipliers can improve a classic casino game without taking it over completely.
What I like most is its simplicity. It still feels like European Roulette. You place the same bets, watch the same single-zero wheel and wait for the ball to land. The Lightning Numbers simply add another moment of excitement before every spin.
I also prefer this straightforward approach to the more feature-heavy XXXtreme Lightning Roulette. A maximum multiplier of 500x may no longer look spectacular compared with some newer games, but I don’t need every roulette spin to offer thousands of times my bet. I like that Lightning Roulette keeps the wheel at the centre of the game.
There is a price for those multipliers. A normal Straight Up win pays 29:1 instead of 35:1, and the RTP on these bets drops slightly to 97.10%. All other bets retain the 97.30% RTP of standard European Roulette. For me, that is a reasonable trade-off when I specifically want to play Straight Up numbers with multiplier potential.
The game has also aged remarkably well. The dark studio, lightning effects and simple interface still look good, and during our testing the game ran smoothly on both desktop and mobile.
Expert View: Lightning Roulette doesn’t need dozens of features to keep me interested. The combination of classic roulette, a strong RTP, and multipliers of up to 500x is enough. After all these years and many newer Lightning releases, the original is still my favourite Lightning roulette game.
