Live baccarat is one of the simplest games in the casino. You back Player or Banker, the dealer turns two cards, and the round is over in under a minute. That simplicity is exactly why studios have loaded the table with extras.
Open any live baccarat game from Evolution, Playtech, or Pragmatic Play, and you will find a ring of optional betting boxes around the main layout: Player Pair, Perfect Pair, Either Pair, Big, Small, Dragon Bonus, and more. They pay far more than the base game – and most of them cost you far more, too. Here is what each one actually pays, and what it quietly costs.
Why Side Bets Are Everywhere in Live Baccarat
The main bets in baccarat are unusually good value for the player. On a standard eight-deck shoe, Banker carries a house edge of roughly 1.06% after the 5% commission, and Player around 1.24%. Those are among the friendliest numbers on any casino floor.
That creates a problem for the operator, and a solution for the game designer: side bets. A side bet is a separate wager, settled independently of whether Player or Banker wins. It gives the studio room to build in a much larger margin while still advertising a low-edge main game. It gives you the occasional 25:1 hit that a flat Player win never will. Neither party is being dishonest about it. The paytables are published. They are just rarely read.

The Pair Bets
The pair bets below are settled using the first two cards only, any third card does not count.
Player Pair and Banker Pair
You are betting that the first two cards dealt to that side are the same rank. The standard payout is 11:1, which produces a house edge of about 10.4% on an eight-deck shoe. Compare that with 1.06% on Banker, and the gap speaks for itself: the same GBP 10 staked on Banker costs you roughly 11p in expected value per round, while GBP 10 on Player Pair costs you a little over GBP 1.
Perfect Pair
Here the cards must match in both rank and suit. The exact maths depends on the version and number of decks. A standard 25:1 Perfect Pair bet has a house edge of about 13.0% with eight decks and 17.1% with six decks. Some providers also pay extra when both Player and Banker make a Perfect Pair, which can significantly change the house edge.
Either Pair
A catch-all bet that wins if either the Player or the Banker hand starts with a pair. It usually pays 5:1 with a house edge in the region of 14.5%. The higher hit rate makes it feel safer than the individual pair bets. It is not.
Big and Small: The Two Exceptions
These two are worth knowing about, because they break the pattern. Instead of card ranks, they bet on how many cards the round uses in total.
- Small wins when the round ends after four cards and typically pays 3:2. House edge: roughly 5.27%.
- Big wins when the round uses five or six cards and typically pays 0.54:1. House edge: roughly 4.35%.
Neither is as good as simply backing Banker, and we would not call either one “good value”. But at around 4-5%, they sit in a completely different bracket to a 17% Perfect Pair, and they are the only baccarat side bets we would describe as merely mediocre rather than outright expensive.
Dragon Bonus
Dragon Bonus pays out when your chosen side wins by a large margin, on a sliding scale that peaks at 30:1 for a nine-point win, and it also pays even money on a natural win. It is the most structurally interesting bet on the table, and its cost depends heavily on which side you attach it to: the Player version runs around 2.7%, while the Banker version is roughly 9.4%. That is a big spread for what looks like the same bet, so check which box you are clicking.
Tie and Egalite Bets
The Tie bet is technically a main bet, but it behaves like a side bet and deserves the same scrutiny. At the common 8:1 payout, the house edge is about 14.4%. At 9:1, offered in some No Commission and Speed Baccarat variants, it drops to around 4.8%. Same bet, same odds, wildly different value depending on the paytable.
Evolution’s Lightning Baccarat takes a different approach. A 20% Lightning Fee is added to every bet, in exchange for random Lightning Card multipliers that can increase winning payouts. This makes its payout structure fundamentally different from standard baccarat.
Always open the game’s own paytable before you stake. Payouts vary by provider and by variant, and the figures above describe a standard eight-deck shoe.
What Side Bets Actually Do to a Session
The numbers above are long-run averages, and no single round will look like them. What side bets really change is variance. Adding a GBP 2 Perfect Pair to every GBP 10 main bet raises your total stake by 20% while attaching it to a bet you will lose the overwhelming majority of the time. Your bankroll will move faster in both directions, and over a long session it will drift down more quickly than the main bets alone would suggest.
There is nothing wrong with that if you want it. Some players find a flat Banker grind dull, and the occasional 25:1 is what keeps the game interesting. Just price it honestly: treat the side bet as entertainment spend, not as a route to a better return.
So Which Ones Are Worth It?
Ranked by house edge, from least to most expensive using 8 decks:
- Dragon Bonus (Player) – around 2.7%, the best of the extras
- Big – around 4.3%
- Tie at 9:1 – around 4.8%, where offered
- Small – around 5.3%
- Dragon Bonus (Banker) – around 9.4%
- Player / Banker Pair – around 10.4%
- Tie at 8:1 – around 14.4%
- Perfect Pair – around 13,7%
- Either Pair – around 13,03%
Our honest take: none of them beat simply backing Banker. If you enjoy side bets, compare the paytable first and keep the stakes small. Dragon Bonus on Player can offer a relatively low house edge under common rules, while Pair and Perfect Pair bets are often considerably more expensive.

Final Thoughts
Side bets are the part of live baccarat that most players never examine, and the part where the house makes most of its money. Now that you can read the paytable properly, you can decide which ones earn a place in your session – and which ones are just an expensive way to add noise.
