In the past, Danes and Finns typically used an array of e-wallets to deposit into their favourite online casinos. However, tighter regulation and national licensing meant that casinos phased out many international payment options in favour of more localised ones regulated by the countries in question. That is where MobilePay comes in.

As its name suggests, MobilePay is a mobile payment application prevalent in Denmark and Finland. It connects to mainstream banks and financial institutions in those countries. It permits you to deposit into casinos using nothing more than your phone, much like Swish in nearby Sweden and Vipps in neighbouring Norway.

We will take a more in-depth look at what MobilePay offers and explain why it may be ideal for Danish and Finnish users to deposit at online gambling sites. Join us as we put MobilePay under the microscope today.

About MobilePay

Danske Bank first devised MobilePay as a smartphone-based payment app in 2013. It is tied to all Danish banks and is heavily regulated and trusted. In 2017, MobilePay rolled out to Finland before merging with Norway’s Vipps in 2022. Today, the payment provider is technically known as Vipps MobilePay, but each country maintains its brand name.

Developed to be compatible with iOS and Android devices, MobilePay is a digital wallet that facilitates transactions using a fingerprint or four-digit code. Users must have a Danish CPR number or Finnish personal identity code to verify they are using the app and have an EEA address. That creates trust and makes the mobile payment option hard to use in any criminal way.

Casino players will note that MobilePay is a deposit-only option with drawbacks. While it is a supremely safe option for depositing, you’ll likely need to process withdrawals using any alternative option. In most cases, this means handing out your personal bank details to the casino in question, thus negating some (albeit not all) of the security benefits of using MobilePay in the first place.

Target Markets

MobilePay only has a minimal user base. Being active in Denmark and Finland, this Copenhagen-based payment provider has around 5.8 million users. If we included Vipps (Norway), it would rise marginally by 300,000. Including MobilePay in Greenland makes little difference to its total number of users. Of course, given its clientele, the primary currencies accepted are DKK and EUR.

MobilePay Account

As mentioned, you will need to be resident in Denmark or Finland before using MobilePay. Furthermore, you’ll need to verify that residence by having a Danish CPR number, a Danish bank account and card, or a Finnish personal number, with an accompanying Finnish bank account. Having this ensures that non-residents can gain access to or use MobilePay.

You can download the MobilePay app in Google Play or the App Store if you’ve fulfilled the above criteria. It costs nothing and allows you to create a new user once installed. From there, you’ll need to verify your account using your phone number, personal number (unique to your residence in Denmark or Finland), and the equivalent of your Bank ID. You may also be required to provide PhotoID or “Billedlegitimation” in Denmark for higher transaction limits.

Finally, you’ll need to link MobilePay to your bank. You can choose one of the associated banks featured in a list, with over sixty across the countries affiliated with the app. These can include but aren’t limited to Nordea, SEB, Kreditbanken, Danske Bank and Fynske Bank.

How to Deposit with MobilePay

Assuming you’ve set everything up, you can head over to your preferred casino and select MobilePay as your chosen option. Only Danish and Finnish licensed casinos can accept MobilePay as an option.

After selecting MobilePay, you can enter your phone number and the amount you wish to deposit. The app will open on your phone, and you’ll have five minutes to confirm the transaction using your four-digit code. This sum arrives at the casino instantly and disappears from your bank account.

How to Withdraw with MobilePay

Like almost all pay-by-phone options, there is no option to withdraw via MobilePay, despite users being able to receive money from other MobilePay customers. Instead, you’re required to select an alternative payment method for withdrawals, and in most cases, this will be a bank transfer to the same bank linked to your MobilePay account.

Because the withdrawal option is entirely different from using MobilePay to deposit, the results you will get will be varied in terms of transaction times, fees and security – more on that below.

Transfer Times, Fees, and Security

MobilePay can be used to deposit into your casino account almost instantly. Furthermore, the app and any transactions you make are free. If you use MobilePay for business, there is a small charge of 0.30 to 0.80 DKK for transactions, so make sure you use your personal MobilePay account instead.

Because MobilePay isn’t available for withdrawals, you’ll need to use bank transfers. This process can be messy since it may involve withdrawal fees (although this is unlikely in Denmark and Finland), and transaction times can vary from 24 hours up to five working days. The results will differ depending on where you play.

MobilePay is regulated and licensed in Denmark and Finland. These Nordic nations keep a close eye on the payment provider and its security layers – from finger scanning to Photo ID, Bank ID, personal numbers, associated banks and four-digit codes all ensure top-quality safety. However, much of this goes out the window regarding withdrawals, as you’ll use a different method. Security is, at this stage, out of MobilePay’s control.
