Fan Tan scores very highly for originality. Evolution didn’t invent the game — Fan Tan has been played in Asia for generations — but it feels genuinely different from almost everything else in a modern live casino lobby.

We think this is a smart interface design that makes a potentially complicated traditional game much more approachable.

During our test sessions, we had just a few short issues, that almost didn’t slow down the game.

The dealers were professional and knowledgeable during our Fan Tan test sessions. What stood out most was how concentrated they were. There are several physical actions to perform, and the beads need to be separated carefully into groups of four before the final result can be determined.

This creates a very different dealer experience from an Evolution game show. Fan Tan dealers spend much of the round concentrating on the game rather than constantly talking, celebrating wins or entertaining players.

We don’t see this as a lack of skill. In fact, running Fan Tan smoothly requires focus and precision, and the dealers we tested handled the game very well. However, it does make the dealer experience less entertaining and interactive than in games where the host has more opportunity to engage with players.

Overall, the dealers are competent, calm and well suited to Fan Tan, but entertainment is clearly secondary to running the game correctly.

Fan Tan has a beautiful Asian-themed studio that fits the traditional character of the game very well. The red and gold details, dark background and decorative elements immediately give the table a distinctive Asian atmosphere.

We also like how the physical equipment is incorporated into the presentation. The beads, metal cup and counting stick are clearly visible and make the traditional way of playing Fan Tan an important part of the studio experience.

From a practical perspective, everything works well too. The table is well lit, the dealer’s actions are easy to follow and the studio never distracts from the game itself.

However, there isn’t much more to it than that. It is an attractive and appropriate studio rather than a spectacular one. Compared with Evolution’s elaborate game-show studios, the presentation is understandably much simpler.

Overall, Evolution has created a polished setting that respects the Asian origins of Fan Tan and gives the game its own identity.
